British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
